The project
The Bournemouth University Cycle Hub spans 10m × 23m and stands 3 metres tall. Maximising the available space, the structure features a hexagonal design. The layout adds visual interest and makes efficient use of the area, with ample parking for a variety of bike types, including cargo bikes.
The hub has been designed to cater to both university members and visitors, with a split design: a secure card-accessible section for staff and students, and an open-access parking area for visitors.
A green roof
The hub’s standout feature is its sedum roof, a green, living roof that improves biodiversity and acts as an insulating layer. It supports Bournemouth University’s sustainability goals and blends with the surrounding woodland.
Two sections
Glass-fronted secure hub: protected by an access-controlled card system so only authorised users, such as students and staff, can park in this area. The glass front gives visibility, natural light and a modern look. Automated sliding doors, numerous cycle racks, motion-activated lighting and 24-hour CCTV.
Open-access visitor parking: free parking for visitors, designed for standard and cargo bikes, with bike repair stations and a pump for everyone, and a dedicated space for the university’s monthly free Bike Doctor maintenance sessions.
Design and delivery
Redwood timber cladding reflects the nearby woodland, and bespoke decals and signage carry Bournemouth University’s branding. The new cycle hub opened in September 2024 to welcome the university’s growing cycling community.
