The project

The project was initiated to rejuvenate the popular shopping street in the centre of Altrincham and create a more inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors. A core aim was to raise the visual character of the space while reflecting the needs and preferences of the local community.

What was delivered

Low-level oval weathering steel (Cor-Ten) planters contain clusters of planting and foliage, bringing greenery to the street. A modular planting system was adapted into a cost-effective, compact design that kept disruption to surrounding businesses to a minimum during installation.

Curved seating skirts the planter beds and provides social seating for shoppers. Each of the three benches carries bespoke brass plates with laser-cut messages, created with local artist Studio Jon Male as a nod to the area’s industrial heritage: the Linotype & Machinery Company opened its factory at Broadheath Industrial Park in 1897.

Cycle stands and bollards were supplied to delineate and serve the newly designed cycle routes that bring visitors into the centre.

The result

Increased footfall, enhanced safety and a thriving, visually appealing shopping street.
